However their original bloodlines, that of the <a href=\"\/breeds\/appaloosa\">Appaloosa<\/a> are very, very old and can be traced back to central Asia.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Origins<\/h3>\n<p>First developed in 1954 by a woman named Leslie Boomhower in Iowa who purchased an appaloosa mare and her foal (Black Hand #1) whose sire was a Shetland Pony. She was particularly impressed with the Black Hand&#8217;s attributes and he became the foundation for the Pony of the Americas breed.
