It all started with Princess Anne of Bohemia who rode a horse across Europe to marry King Richard II. Allegedly she rode the whole way sidesaddle to symbolize protection of her virginity. After this story hit the news, it was seen as crude for women of any class to ride astride a horse. Trendsetters have been around a long time, folks.
